jong jin park: paper and clay

Jong Jin Park incorporates stacks of tissue paper into his ceramic sculptures, adding interest and texture to the work. How? By layering hundreds of sheets of paper and brushing the stacks with clay slip before firing. Though the stained paper looks fragile, the process strengthens the material.

While the paper is incorporated into the ceramic forms in most of this collection, Park created a few pieces, like Artistic Stratum (pictured above), entirely from the slip-coated paper – in this case, 600 sheets of tissue paper coated with slip, stained with pigment and fired.
