With temperatures that are quickly dropping to single digits tonight my thoughts are all about Spring 2013 and the promise of a truly special creativity retreat in the beach town of Cape May, New Jersey.
re-treat. re:treat. treat.
The concept for this 7 day event is kinda brilliant. Not surprising when you realize that the retreat is being offered by Ronna Weltman, Robert Dancik and Loretta Lam. The much beloved jewelry artists have created an experience that nurtures, teaches, coaches and coaxes.
The focus is on helping you break new creative ground – an inspirational week of hands on creative play. All in a charming beach town surrounded by sounds and scenes of the sea. Join them to explore jewelry and small object design, inspiration, creativity and the nuts and bolts of fabrication.
What’s so brilliant about the retreat?
First of all, they’ve broken it up into a 2-day experience, a 5-day experience or a full 7-day experience. Busy schedule? No problem, just come for the weekend. Have a little more time? Maybe the 5-day experience works best for you. Really want to TREAT yourself to the ReTreat? Go for the full 7 days and get a price break. Nice.
Second, the schedule says a lot about how much thought has gone into planning this event.
Loretta Lam is up first, teaching the weekend session. Lam gives you the tools to move past self-imposed design constraints, opening the door for unique and dramatic BIG, beautiful art jewelry. Spend two days talking about inspired color, making lightweight beads and learning to create a beautiful balance without resorting to standard symmetrical design.
The experience continues for 5 more days with Dancik and Weltman, who take you on a journey of exploration with a variety of materials including polymer clay, metals, Faux Bone, wire, putties and techniques like texturing, cold connections, wire working, simple casting and hinges. The end result? Besides a new perspective and a mental toolbox filled with fresh tools to help you keep the creativity flowing, you will create objects of your choosing – art jewelry, vessels, sculpture, journals – it’s up to you. Mmmmmm…
Don’t take my word for it – here’s a tiny sample of what students are saying about these three funtastic artists and teachers:
“I signed up for Loretta Lam’s “Design Boot Camp” with a bit of skepticism. I have a Master’s degree and 20 years of experience in Interior Design. I figured I knew it all. I really wasn’t thinking Design. I loved her work and I’d really hoped to refine my own newly acquired polymer skills and techniques in this class. In fact, I got so much more than I imagined. With respect to jewelry, Loretta encouraged me, in a supportive and stimulating environment, to rethink and ultimately to reshape and expand my design vocabulary. It was a great class!” ~ Ruth Levine
“In hard economic times it is easy to understand the option to just buy the book. What you get from both Ronna and Robert are the extras that didn’t make it in the books mostly because there would never be the space. They take you beyond what was published and include tips on materials, techniques and supplies that are priceless. It isn’t just imparting information; it is their willingness to help you go beyond the techniques being explained. If you are trying to find your voice, Ronna and Robert are your orchestra.” ~ Eileen Moore
“Fabulous class! Loretta managed to orchestrate teaching people at all levels of experience and not leave anyone behind. She is a gifted teacher with purposeful ideas to loosen up our right brain activities. She certainly knows her subject and can explain it in a manner that makes sense. I would take another class with her with no hesitation!” ~ Linda Furman
“Robert and Ronna created a world for their students where lessons became journeys, and experiments with techniques and mediums freshly learned quickly took on our own voices with their full encouragement. . .we were emboldened to push far beyond anything we thought possible, knowing Ronna and Robert were there to offer any help we might need. It’s a rare workshop where the objective is to organically connect the dots between what is being taught and who we already are as artists. Thank you for an amazing experience.” ~ Kathryn Corbin
